The Impact of Fundamental Principles in International Maritime Law Decisions on Turkish Maritime Law
Between October 14-18, 2024, within the scope of TÜBİTAK Project 123K801, an international field study was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Sevda Keskin, with the participation of Research Assistant Şeyma Kuş, Research Assistant Nil İrem Saray, and undergraduate student Eylül Nilsu Gökmen.
As part of the project’s international field study, visits were made to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg.
At the ICJ, a tour of the Peace Palace was conducted, followed by a presentation on the court’s operations, ongoing cases, and the impact of its decisions on international law. Participants also had the opportunity to observe court proceedings and learn about the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
At ITLOS, the event started with an opening speech by Judge Ximene Hinrics Oyarce, followed by a tour of the court and its library. A presentation on the tribunal’s jurisdiction was given by legal expert Yuhao Tang.
Additionally, participants visited the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), which handles cases from the former Yugoslav and Rwandan International Criminal Tribunals. Prosecutor Amir Zec provided insights into the tribunal’s operations, and Nemanja Stjepanović introduced the courtroom and discussed past cases.
